Little Ruby inspires schools £15,000 fundraising campaign Little Ruby Baker loves school so much she’s inspired a £15,000 fundraising campaign to make sure she can stay. Ruby, seven, a pupil at St Edward’s in Lees, Oldham, has Leigh’s Syndrome, a very rare condition which affects just one in 36,000 children. The inherited disease is a progressive and terminal degenerative condition which affects the central nervous system, causing developmental regression and seizures. Many such children attend specialist schools – but defiant Ruby can now stay in mainstream education after winning a campaign for a sensory room. The room for Ruby and her classmates should be ready by September after thousands of votes won a competition run by Engage Mutual insurance to scoop £5,000. The rest of the cash was raised through fundraising – and a £4,000 anonymous donation. Ruby’s mum Natalie Baker, 39,a baby swimming teacher, used Facebook to push for votes – and the response was fantastic.
