Little Su, a 5-year-old English Shepherd that was an operational member of Alaska Search and Rescue Dog for three years, died last night after consuming anti-freeze. Little Su’s owners reported finding a container near their property on the 47000 block of Grumman Street containing a mixture of anti-freeze and chicken after she became sick on Jan. 7. A veterinarian confirmed that the dog had consumed anti-freeze. The Anchorage Police Department is investigating the case. Anyone with information on this case is asked to call police at 786-8900 or to report a crime tip anonymously, contact Anchorage Crime Stoppers at 561-STOP or go online to anchoragecrimestoppers. Little Su was trained since she was a puppy to become a search and rescue dog. Her owners have been long time members of the search and rescue community in Alaska. They have been volunteers of the Nordic Ski Patrol since 1999 and joined ASARD five years ago. Her passing has hit the SAR community hard. “Search and Rescue dogs serve a vital role across all of Alaska, and this is truly a loss that will be felt state wide. Please keep your positive thoughts in mind for our teams and the greater community that they serve,” said Brian McGorry, ASARD Assistant Unit Leader. ASARD is a nonprofit, volunteer emergency service unit based in Anchorage. Its primary purpose is to assist SAR operations with teams of highly trained search dogs and handlers, to include Trooper search and rescue missions. Find out more about ASARD at asard.org/
