Little Wattlebird (Antochaera chrysoptera); note differences in appearance to Red Wattlebird; slightly smaller; no red (or any other) wattles on cheeks/head; bold white cotton-bud (tear-drop) markings on underparts; blue iris; not shown here, but one of the key diagnostic features for identifying this species are the large chestnut patches on outer wing (base of primaries); importantly, these chestnut (rufous) markings are highlighted when bird spreads its wings in flight; however, easily the best tool for locating this species is to learn and then listen out for its (oh so) distinctive call-it does sound somewhat comical- but is altogether fantastic and one of the most wonderful sounds of our KI bush.
