Little bit of a question for you. My cousin just got home from deer camp. He missed a relatively easy 40-yard shot on a buck Monday, chalked it up to an error on his part. Then Tuesday took a small yearling doe at 30. The doe was hit broadside with a .30-06,180gr blue box Federal and the bullet made a pretty substantial wound on the near side, almost like it hit sideways. It to reach the ribs on the off side, One lung was intact and the deer ran 200 yards. Fairly obvious that something went wrong. That bullet should blow though several broadside 67lb deer. The rifle was a Remington 742, and Temps were well below freezing, so its possible gunk prevented the bolt from going into battery. Ive offered to chronograph it this week in similar temperatures with that ammunition and see what I come up with. If something was seriously wrong velocity wise it might explain the issue with the buck. Maybe it WAS hit?
