Little over 13 years ago I was given news that seemed unreal. I had this little boy that was having fits all the time. He hated dr offices, hated going in to the bank. Otherwise was quiet, played with cars and watched Spongebob like it was the greatest thing on earth! When I took him in for ANOTHER double ear infection. The second thing the Dr said to me was Have you had him tested for Autism? BOOM! Amid the screams of frustration, the cries of wanting to get out of that room, the world as I knew it and hoped it would be came to a complete, screeching halt! From that point on we would be winging it. I thank all of teachers and drs for helping us along the way. We have been pretty lucky that it hasnt been a journey full of lies and run arounds. Has it ended, oh hell no! Will it ever? Maybe, but until then, everyday is something different and always unexpected. The little things and routines stay the same but in general, you never know whats coming. For any parent that has a child on the Autism Spectrum, this month is for us to celebrate the differences of our children and make people aware and help them understand what Autism is.
