Littleton, North Carolina first ever Cub Scout Troop. While Littleton had a Boy Scout and Explorer Post, there was never a Cub Scout troop until after 1954 when Mother, Betsy Skinner Acai and Katie Harvey took it upon themselves to organize one. The Reverend Kelly Wilson, Pastor of the Littleton Methodist Church from 1953-1957, volunteered to be he troop leader. Mother made this picture with an Ansco film camera in our backyard at 201 College Street. We are posed on the footprint of the Littleton College water tower. She waited until we all had our official Scout uniforms which were available in the Scouting Section of the Leggett Department Stores in Warrenton and Roanoke Rapids. Our Scout meetings where held in the homes of the Scouts and at a building in Littleton know as the Scout Hut. That cinder block building stood on the property were the Lions Club Building stands today. It was much smaller than the present day Lions Club building and was nearly completely destroyed when the hot water heater, which did not have a safety relief valve, malfunctioned and exploded. Fortunately, no one was using the building the night of the explosion, but cinder blocks where blown into several nearby lots. There was no fire, but when one thinks about it, the destruction took place on the former Littleton College campus which burned in 1919. Reverend Kelly is kneeling in front of the scouts and is looking at our family dog Pepper, a registered fox terrier. I am in the back row on the left and Bill Leach, Becky Doziers brother is on the right in the back row. Bill would later earn the highest attainable rating of Eagle Scout. I do not recall anyone else in our generation earning that award, but if any of those reading this post know different, please advise. I am not able to identify the five other scouts in the photo and assistance in that regard would also be appreciated. Three other men from Littleton assisting with The Littleton Boy Scout Troop 85 and the Scout explorer post: Ray Brown, Ned Long Clark and Sad, Steve Acai. Enjoy and Share, Stephen/OG
