Liverpool and England defender Glen Johnson could be banned from driving after failing to turn up to a court case. He was found guilty in his absence of failing to tell police in North Wales of the identity of a driver of his Audi between May 8 and June 7. He had denied the offence. His solicitor Barry Warburton sought an adjournment of the trial at Llandudno magistrates court - because the footballer was in the custody of his club before this weekends important match at Hull City. Mr Warburton said :I was told yesterday that Mr Johnson couldnt come to court because there is an away game this weekend and quite literally the players are locked up from nine oclock this morning. They train from nine until two then are sent to Hull where they play on Sunday and are kept in hotel rooms. They are quite literally in the custody of the club. I apologise he cant get here. Hes in a catch-22 situation. If he had been here today he would have been disciplined by the club. Hes in a very, very difficult position. Refusing the adjournment, magistrates chairwoman Jean Bryson said :Mr Johnson will have known what his football fixtures were when this trial was fixed on October 3. Hes had ample opportunity to bring this to the courts attention before today. We are therefore all agreed the trial should proceed in his absence and in the interests of justice. The prosecution said a police officer had been using a laser speed-measuring device on the A55 dual carriageway at Colwyn Bay, where theres a 50mph limit, at lunchtime on February 18 when he saw an Audi travelling westbound. A notice was sent to the registered keeper, 29-year-old Johnson, but no response was received. Prosecutor John Wylde said Johnson was visited at his home and served a notice of intended prosecution. He had 28 days to complete the notice and return it to North Wales police but did not. Ms Bryson said :We have heard uncontested evidence there was no response to any of the notices including the one personally served. Johnson was found guilty and it was revealed he already had six points on his licence. The latest offence carries six penalty points. Sentencing was adjourned.
