Liverpool have been told to pay £6.1m if they want to sign player Liverpool have been told to pay £6.1m if they want to sign Sporting Lisbon defender Tiago Ilori, according to reports from A Bola. The Reds have been chasing the 21-tyear-old for much of the summer, and even had a £3m opening offer for his signature knocked back a few months ago. Despite their interest having cooled since then, the Merseysiders are now back in for the centre-back, and are willing to up their initial offer. News that Sebastian Coates is set to miss the majority of the season has left Brendan Rodgers short of defensive options, and could force him into the transfer market in the coming days. He has made Ilori one of his major targets, but Sporting are not overly keen to sell. However, with the youngster having recently rejected a new contract offer from the club, the Portuguese giants will reluctantly do business for around £6.1m. Liverpool have also been linked with Schalke’s Kyriakos Papadopoulos, but the Greek ace’s injury record is believed to be a major concern. The Anfield side have already secured a deal for Kolo Toure this summer, but with Martin Skrtel believed to be looking to move on, Rodgers is desperate to bring in a fresh face to rejuvenate his rearguard.
