Liverpool striker Luis Suarez is on course to break another Premier League goalscoring record as the Reds take on Sunderland tonight. Suarez has so far hit 28 goals this season, equalling the club record for the league set by Robbie Fowler in the 1995/96 campaign. None of the Uruguayans goals have come from the penalty spot, putting him level with Alan Shearer, Robin van Persie and Didier Drogba for most goals in a season excluding penalties, though Suarez has achieved this in just 25 games. Only Andy Cole has scored more goals without needing penalties, with 34 from 40 games in the 1993/94 campaign. Suarez is just six goals off the all- time scoring record in a single season – 34 from Cole and Shearer – though they were achieved when the Premier League consisted of 42 games. The record in a 38-game season is 31 – set by Shearer and Cristiano Ronaldo – and Suarez could reach that figure tonight if he hits his fourth hat-trick of the season
