Liverpool’s manager Brendan Rodgers faces an anxious wait to hear from the Merseyside club’s owner, John W Henry if he would be keen on splashing the cash to bring their former playmaker, Xabi Alonso back home to Anfield. The Reds were forced to accept defeat in their long-term pursuit of Henrikh Mkhitaryan who is on the cusp of joining Borussia Dortmund and this situation has forced Rodgers’ hand to aggressively pursue other targets. Rodgers is reported to be keen on snapping up Alonso who could be surplus to requirements at Real Madrid come the new season. However, Alonso at 31 years of age is likely to command a £10 million asking price something which goes against the ethos of club owner Henry, as he will not be willing to stump up the price to a player over 30 years of age. Alonso was the backbone of the Liverpool midfield during his time in the Premier League and his partnership with club legend Steven Gerrard laid a solid base to launch attack after attack from the engine-room. Liverpool are still missing their former Spanish player as they have never been able to find a like-for-like replacement for Alonso as he used to dictate the tempo of play and was a pass-master like no other. However, a potential move for Alonso hinges in the balance as Rodgers first needs to seek the blessings of his club’s hierarchy to make a move. Like if you would love Alonso to come back to Liverpool. (Mo)
