Livestrong Challenge Cycling Event Comes to Davis June 22 & 23 On Saturday and Sunday June 22 and 23 the Livestrong Challenge Davis activities will be focused on downtown’s Central Park. It is estimated that over 800 riders will depart early Sunday morning June 23 to ride one of 4 professionally supported fundraising rides of either 20, 45, 65 or 100 miles in length. This ride is one of the premiere fundraisers in the United States and one of only three Livestrong Challenge bicycling events nationwide in 2013. The funds that are raised through rider pledges, fund-raising and sponsorships are distributed by the Livestrong Foundation for cancer research, prevention, early detection and control programs. During last year’s event in Davis, participants raised over $950,000 for the fight against cancer. An integral part of the event is a free-to-the-public Livestrong Challenge Village on the Central Park “Green” featuring many health-related and event sponsor displays. The Village will be open on Saturday, June 22 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the registration tent on the Central Park “Green” will issue packets to registered participant. The Davis Farmer’s Market will operate during its regular hours of 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 22. The free Livestrong Village booths will also be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 23. A free bicycle rodeo will be available for kids as well as the popular bicycle powered Central Park carousel. Once they finish their bicycle ride, Livestrong Challenge riders will be able to enjoy post-race food and refreshments at Central Park. All four of the bicycle course routes will close to riders at 4:00 p.m. Because of the amount of equipment necessary to support the Village Expo and the Livestrong Challenge Ride, the Davis Police Department has authorized the closure of B Street between 4th and 5th Streets. The one block closure of B Street next to Central Park will begin at 8 a.m. Thursday, June 20 and will remain closed until Monday morning, June 24. Emergency vehicles will have access to this area in case of an emergency. Motorists and Central Park area residents can use either University Avenue or any of the other streets along the 5th Street corridor to access the downtown. Visitors to the Central Park area will begin seeing the familiar white Village Expo tents rising on the Green on Thursday and Friday, June 20 and 21. C Street next to Central Park between 3rd and 4th Streets will close at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 22 immediately following the Davis Farmers Market to allow for the construction of the start and finish zone. C Street will reopen on Sunday June 23 by 8:00 p.m. Parking for Sunday morning Community Church services will be made available after riders leave C Street at 7:30 a.m. Other road closures and no parking zones will be in affect around Central Park on Sunday morning June 23. For a complete list of the dates and times for the Central Park area street closures, visit cityofdavis.org and click on the “Livestrong Challenge” information. On Sunday morning June 23, the assembled bicycle riders will begin their ride at 7:30 a.m. by heading south on C Street. The riders will then travel east through downtown on 2nd Street, north on F Street to County Road 29 and then west onto Yolo County roads. Descriptions of the various courses to be ridden and registration information can be found under the “Team LIVESTRONG Challenge Davis” route and event information at: https://teamlivestrong.org/events/1400. Riders can still sign up and registrations for the rides will be available online and in person at Central Park up until Sunday, June 23. While out on the various Livestrong bicycle routes, there will be rest stops staffed by local volunteers and community groups. The Challenge is not considered a race and Livestrong bicycle riders are instructed to use regular “rules of the road” while they safely complete their distance course. At the finish line in Davis, each cancer survivor who finishes will receive a yellow long-stemmed rose. The public is encouraged to cheer the Livestrong Challenge riders as they leave Davis on Sunday morning and as they return to Central Park on C Street. Other Livestrong Challenge bicycle rides will take place this year in Philadelphia, PA on August 17and in Austin, TX on October 20.
