Living Life Gods Way Proverbs 5:22-23 NLT[22] An evil man is held captive by his own sins; they are ropes that catch and hold him. [23] He will die for lack of self-control; he will be lost because of his great foolishness. Having self-control is essential in the life of a believer. It is a fruit of the Spirit. Never denying yourself leads to great deception and makes you a BIG FOOL! Bondage starts when you refuse to say NO to sin! The word NO is one of the first words a child learns, but without continued discipline, can be the very word that a person leaves out of their private life if there is no accountability. Teaching a new believer the importance of self-control can be the very lesson that can keep them from being ensnared again to sin. A productive and useful believer has learned the importance of applying self-control to their developmental growth as a Christian. A person with sound faith has realized the importance of exercising self-control. It is as important as being filled with love and patience. A person who never exercises self-control leaves themselves open to all kinds of enemy attack, because they havent built any protective walls against deception. A good way to check your willingness to be self-controlled is to fast from food for a determined time. That will check your self-control. 2 Timothy 3:1-5 NLT[1] You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. [2] For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. [3] They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. [4] They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. [5] They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that! Proverbs 25:28 NLT[28] A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls. Titus 2:2 NLT[2] Teach the older men to exercise self-control, to be worthy of respect, and to live wisely. They must have sound faith and be filled with love and patience. Galatians 5:22-23 NLT[22] But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, [23] gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! 1 Peter 1:13 NLT[13] So think clearly and exercise self-control. Look forward to the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world. 2 Peter 1:3-9 NLT[3] By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. [4] And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the worlds corruption caused by human desires. [5] In view of all this, make every effort to respond to Gods promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, [6] and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, [7] and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. [8] The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. [9] But those who fail to develop in this way are shortsighted or blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old sins.
