Living a Prayer for Janay(and all other abused women):For those of us who are concerned for the saftey of Janay Rice, and other abused women,we must continue to be vigilant in our resolve to let the world know how insidious, dehumanizing and life-threatening domestic violence is. Consider this fact:Black women face a disproportionate share of fatal domestic violence in America. In 2012, 468 Black females were murdered by males in single victim/single offender incidents, at a rate of 2.46 per 100,000. For white females murdered by males, the rate was 1.00 per 100,000( michigancitizen/black-women-who-suffer-domestic-violence-more-likely-to-be-murdered/) Domestic abuse against Africana women is reflective of a constant, continuous cylce of what can easily be termed as collective hatred. The conditions for African women, in the black community, support this fact;An Africana woman/girl is more likely to be raped and/or molested before turning eighteen; We are more likely to raise children alone;and, even when educated,we are more likely to be unemployed or employed in the lowest paying jobs. Infant and maternal mortality rates are high for Africana women;and homelessness is also a problem that many Africana women face. The sad part is that much needed community and family support systems are often lacking. Then too, where domestic abuse is concerned,Africana women rarlely have allies. In almost every public instances,no matter how severe the abuse,Africana women are viewed through a criminal lens when intimate partner violence is at play. Is it any wonder, then, that.women like, Janay Rice, stay with their abusers? We need to work to eliminate the blame the victimcampaigns that immediately occur when a woman is abused in our community. We need to raise the value of Africana female bodies,so that they are on equal par with the value placed on the safety of Africana male bodies. The key thing to remember is this:every single time an Africana woman is abused --our entire community takes the hit.No nation can promote/support the abuse of its women/girls and ever expect to be respected by the rest of the world...or liberated from outside acts of race-based terrorism.
