Living close to major roadways Living close to major roadways, such as freeways, freeway ramps, or heavily trafficked arterial roads, is associated with higher blood pressure, according to a new analysis published October 1, 2014 in the Journal of the American Heart Association. The study is an analysis of the Womens Health Initiative and includes 5401 postmenopausal women living in the San Diego area. More than 40% had hypertension. People who lived within 100 m of any major roadway were 22% more likely to have hypertension than those who lived more than 1000 m from the road. Prior studies suggest that residential proximity to major roadways is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, according to lead investigator Kipruto Kirwa (Brown University School of Public Health, Providence, RI). Endoscopes may pass on E. coli An E. coli outbreak at an Illinois hospital in US was caused by endoscopes that had bacterial contamination despite being disinfected in the recommended way. The outbreak occurred among patients who underwent procedures with duodenoscopes. The complicated design of duodenoscopes makes cleaning difficult. It appears that these devices have the potential to remain contaminated with pathogenic bacteria even after recommended reprocessing is performed, Dr. Lauren Epstein, of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and colleagues wrote in the study published in the Oct. 8 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
