Living in Birmingham we are only too aware of the impact of terrorism on our streets especially in this week which as we mark the 40th anniversary of the atrocious pub bombings. Thats why its good news for people in Northfield that the Home Secretary has given details of new counter-terrorism measures which will help protect British citizens and keep our streets safe and secure. When the security and intelligence agencies tell us that the threat we face is now more dangerous than at any time before or since 9/11, we should take notice. To counter this threat, where we can tighten our laws and toughen the powers and capabilities available to us, we should. That’s why we’re introducing new measures to keep up with the very serious and rapidly changing threats we face. These new powers will help us to prevent radicalisation, for example by requiring schools, universities and councils to take steps to counter radicalisation and by requiring internet providers to retain data to identify individual users. I know that residents in Northfield and across our area care deeply about our City being a safe and secure place to bring up their children and grandchildren. Thats why I welcome this properly-considered, thought through set of proposals that will help to keep us safe and protect our way of life.
