Living less than 1,000 feet from an FEC crossing in Sebastian, I - TopicsExpress

Living less than 1,000 feet from an FEC crossing in Sebastian, I have followed with interest the many stories and comments here regarding the proposed high-speed rail service that will result in drastic changes to our way of life on the Treasure Coast. I will not rehash the issues of traffic disruption, noise pollution, life and health safety, economic loss or the duplicitous actions of the Fortress Investment Group LLC, and their minions. I will not dignify the comment of one columnist who thinks a local stop would somehow make this travesty OK. There are good folks signing petitions, attending meetings and writing to the editor. Local governments have reviewed the available information and come out almost unanimously against the so-called All Aboard Florida project. All that is nice, but in the end will likely accomplish nothing. In my opinion at this late date the only thing that will save the Treasure Coast from being decimated by this expansion is the dedication of lots of public funds to hire attorneys and consultants to fight the project in the courts and in the national media. Frankly, Fortress couldnt care less what is published in the Press-Journal. However stories and op-eds in The New York Times and USA Today will get their attention. Teams of high-powered attorneys seeking relief in state and federal courts will get their attention. The lagoon and the river and the beaches are all important to our quality of life but all the money spent on them will be for nothing if FEC is allowed to proceed. What is required is the funding of a professionally designed program to actively fight this dismal project tooth and nail. And here is another thought … could the scrub jay be the Treasure Coasts snail darter?
