Living on borrowed time... Let me begin with an incredible, encouraging statistic. The Bible is the runaway, record stomping, best selling blockbuster of all time! No other book even comes close. Heres how the comparisons stack up in terms of number of books printed: The Bible: 6 billion+ Quotations from Chairman Mao: 800 million+ The Qur’an: 800 million+ Xinhua Dictionary: 400 million+ Le Petit Prince: 200 million+ A Tale of Two Cities: 200 million+ The Lord of the Rings: 150 million+ The Book of Mormon: 120 million+ Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone: 107 million+ And Then There Were None: 100 million+ The Hobbit: 100 million+ Dream of the Red Chamber: 100 million+ The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe: 85 million+ The Da Vinci Code: 80 million+ And Gods Word continues to sell to the tune of 100 million plus new Bibles yearly. To top off this phenomenal feat, an amazing 98% of the world’s population have access to parts of or the whole Bible! Lets contrast all this with one of the big red flag earmarks of a culture in decline--the suppression of truth. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth (Romans 1:18). Isnt it amazing that a nation filled with Bibles can wage outright war against the truth found in it glorious pages! I vividly recall the first Jack In The Box I received as a young boy. Remember? You wound the little handle while the music played until suddenly, Jack came popping out of the box. To do the whole thing over again, you had to force Jack back into the box by pushing him down. He never wanted to go back. He had to be pushed down. Thats a picture of suppression. It means to hold back, restrain, keep away from others, force down, or to imprison. When a society treats the truth this way, particularly Gods truth, you can be sure that society is in decline. Can anyone say America? When laws are passed to imprison the truth from getting out; When books containing Gods truth (including the Bible) are banned; When it becomes frowned upon and even punishable to speak Gods truth; When a society becomes so estranged from Gods truth that they declare it to be absolutely wrong and, worse, deem wrong to be absolutely right, that society is living on borrowed time. Lets pray for America like never before. God is still on His throne. And praise God, He still answers prayer!
