Living the Separated Life Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do no touch what is unclean and I will receive you. 2 Cor. 6:17 The principle of separation is woven throughout the Bible. At the Creation, light was separated from darkness and the waters from the firmament. God makes a distinction between good and evil, wheat and tares, sheep and goats. He requires His people to draw a clear line and not be linked or yoked with the sinful practices of ungodly society. How then does Biblical separation apply to Gods people? It is much more than a cultural distinction that some may perceive as simply resistance to change or being out of step with the times. This clearly defined doctrine involves being separated unto God (Romans 1:1) and begins in the heart, with a renewed mind (Romans 12:1-2). A close walk with God and obedience to His Word will separate us from the worlds attractions. In the Old Testament, God delivered His people from Egypt, a type of the world. He still calls us today to be holy, separated recipients of Gods transforming grace (1 Peter 2:9). As strangers and pilgrims on earth, we are citizens of the heavenly kingdom. We live in the world but are not to be part of the worlds system and its corruption. Living the separated life involves all areas and will affect our behavior, priorities, and appearance, along with our attitudes and perspectives. Though most of us may not face severe persecution, perhaps we have more to fear from smiles of a friendly world than their hostile frown. We face pressure to compromise, to blend in, to not be different. Are we drifting with the world, or are we anchored in the Word? Are we following the changing whims of fads and fashions, or are we committed to do the will of our unchanging God? Blessings,
