Living the suburban dream of being a world-class engineer, I - TopicsExpress

Living the suburban dream of being a world-class engineer, I landed in Jalpaiguri Govt. Engg College on August 8th 2010. And today sitting before a pile load of dusty books and suitcases, which still need unpacking, it feels difficult to pen the epilogue of my college days. Four years. Four years of college life, always hopeful and happening, have passed. Most of it may subside in the gray lanes of my memory but where the sun shall always shine my dear friends and all those cherish able memories with them shall always prosper. And in these four years what did we become? World class Engineers?? No. But we did become good-hearted, striving, dedicated, cheerful, team-playing, sociable, amicable men. In these bonds of friendship, we forgot our differences, we forgot the competition. We didn’t degenerate; rather we united beyond the boundaries of villages, towns or cities; beyond religions, castes; beyond societies, schools or community. We shared books, breakfast, even beds. ‘JO TERA HAI WHO MERA HAI’ – became the motto of living. We lied for a friend, cheated for a friend, got punished for a friend, but we never betrayed any of them for better or worse. College isn’t complete without classrooms, filled or empty. The teachers may not have been important, or the books, but the endless scribbles on the desks, the chocolate wrappers on the floor, or the smileys on the blackboard sure made the sanctum sanctorum of the dim light , airy and half-filled classrooms as memorable as the other. Nonetheless was the chalk fights, the pranks on the classmates, sometimes teachers, and endless arguments on gibberish topics. Playgrounds might not have been my kind of thing, but I sure did play a lot of football in my first and second years. So empathizing with all my year mates who practically sacrificed anything for games, the fields will miss us now that we are gone. No more of those tournaments, no more of howling and crying on the fields, no more of taunts, no more of free kicks – penalties, no more all night carom, no more 29 or auction bridge. And most importantly hostels; hostel life integrated us. The fast internet late at nights, or early mornings and equally slow internet in the evenings will not anymore intrigue or bother us respectively. No more of FIFA or CS on LAN play. How shall we miss the tension waiting in line for our share of the toilet time! Or how foul we smelled not having bathed for a couple of days! Or the food served in mess or the action packed Common Room during IPL matches! Or late night addas, beer bottles and cigarette stubs on the floor! Adios my home, my life. Adios the best days of my life. #Jolu
