Liz Hahn-Mattioliposted toConcerned Citizens of Throop 38 minutes ago A brief overview of Marjol Battery and Equipment Company history, as we have been told. Marjol operated a recycling facility from approx. 1962-1980. Site operations consisted of reclaiming lead from used automotive batteries. Batteries were cut open or smashed in order to open and remove the lead plates, discarding of the acid and crushing the casing. At times the lead posts and connectors from tops of the batteries were melted down and formed into ingots while the crushed casings were dumped into strip pits. Through the years of operation, the soil became contaminated above 500 mg/kg and approximately 372, 000 cubic yards. During the years of 1988-1992, off-site impact on neighboring residential properties were addressed. Temporary stabilization of the site itself was also addressed and a low hazard and high hazard pile were contained onsite. Surface water runoff was discharged using a controlled manner, windblown dust was controlled by pavement, and direct contact with contamination was maintained by the use of fencing around the facility. Permanent site stabilization started 2008 and to date remains substantially completed. Sounds simple enough, right? A former recycling and smelter site, showed lead contamination. The site and residential properties addressed. Initial stabilization concerns addressed with permanent stabilization now substantially completed. Concerns addressed and no longer a need to worry. Over the next several weeks we will take a look at the history of Marjol, the offsite releases and the impact on our community.
