Llandudno beat last years champions Spirit and belief is growing Llandudno beat last years champions Llandudno won this encounter by the finest of margins after having built a match winning score before half time, but had to desperately cling on, to win in the final minutes of play. Bala put the early pressure on, resulting in Llandudno giving away a number of penalties, one of which was converted. Llandudno settled down and began to put their game together and they opened their scoring when from a grubber kick ahead behind the visitors defence by Ed Weston, Josh Roberts collected and crossed for his first try of the match. The conversion was missed. Bala held the upper hand in the set scrums with their heavier pack, with Llandudno having the better of the open play. Bala hit back with a flowing movement from within their own half and were rewarded with an unconverted try. It was from open play having gained clean ball from a line out that centre Dave Davies took a great line and Ed Weston offloaded to enable him to touch down near the posts, giving Luke Jones the easiest of conversions. They followed this up with an excellent driving maul from a line out, giving Josh Roberts his second try of the match and Llandudno a comfortable half time lead - 17-8. Rhodri Carlton Jones converted two penalties in the second half to give Llandudno a 23-8 lead on 65 minutes, and what looked like a match winning score line. However, Bala didnt win the league last year by being pushovers and raised their forward lead game into the breeze. It didnt get any easier for Llandudno when they lost ball carrying second row Billy McQeenie who was yellow carded for not retreating 10 metres in the last 10 minutes of play. Bala began to put considerable pressure on the Llandudno line, and were rewarded with two more forward driving tries, one of which was converted, bringing them within three points the home side score line. Llandudno now had to put in a tremendous defensive effort in the final minutes of play, and managed to cling on to a notable, and important home win. Match Report by Howie.
