Llandudno squander chances Missed opportunity Llandudno entertained second placed Ruthin in Div 1 North at Maesdu Road,and if they had taken six points from two kickable penalties in the first half,they would have come out comfortable winners in this encounter. Llan took the match to the visitors from the start,keeping play within there half,and it was from a line out near the try line,that scrumhalf Tom Hocknell crossed for the opening try. Ruthin hit back shortly afterwards with a penalty by fly half Callum Bennett,however it was Llan who kept the pressure on,with Ed Weston making a telling break into there twenty two metre area,from which they gave away a penalty,which fly half Luke Jones converted. Llan continued during this first half to put the visitors on the back foot,and from a flowing movement from one side of the pitch to the other side,winger Hugh Griffith touched down for an unconverted try. During this period of play,Llan were awarded a number of penalties within kicking distance,but decided to kick for line outs near the visitors try line but a strong defence kept them out,but Llan finished the half with a ten point lead. Ruthin turned the match around in the second half,and began to gain control,and reduced the lead from a converted penalty by Callum Bennett. They finally from a maul near the Llan try line secured a try by flanker Tydur Parry,and with the conversion by Callum Bennett,drawing level with thirteen points all. Llan continued to have the better of the play,and kept play well inside of the Ruthin half,but lost the ball when in a possible try scoring position on the twenty two,which was kick down field by a Ruthin player,and with the Llan defence all up in attack,there right wing Josh Wilson raced the length of the pitch for a match winning try,which Callum Bennett also converted. The final quarter of the match,was of Llan constantly pressing for match winning points,but they came up against a strong defence, they did manage in the final minutes of play to score a try with winger James Gregson crossing and touching down,and a conversion would have given them a drawn match,but the kick by Luke Jones failed. A comment made by a Ruthin supporter,”If they had kicked there penalties they would have won,however we will take the win,but the best team lost”.
