Lloyd, skipper of the Ratahi reports that the tarakihi fishing was very good when he was out with some keen fishermen last Friday and this Tuesday, but only average on weekend. Legal snapper were still elusive but under sized snapper are everywhere. This is very promising for future but not so good right now. He said the tarakihi were caught on a variety of baits but fresh tuatuas were lethal. The water is still cold but should warm up as we get closer to 2015. Some playful dolphins turned up.....another sign of summer on its way? Hugh was skippering the Te Kuia and has been out several days this week. He found that the tarakihi fishing has certainly improved inshore. They had good catches of big tarakihi in 40 metres. A few snapper around 35 cm were welcomed aboard by some lucky fishermen. There were some gurnard caught too. A frost fish was a surprise catch. It is quite rare to catch them on a line as they frequent the deeper waters. Sometimes they come in shore and can be found washed up on the beach. They have platinum-silver coloured skin. The delicate white flesh is good to eat. Mako, blue and nurse sharks are making an appearance, targeting the anglers fish as they are wound in on the line. This shows a change in the water conditions providing an improvement in the quantity of food available to them closer in to shore. Squid, tuatuas and pilchards were all producing good results. The general consensus is that the fishing is improving dramatically.
