Loaded onto the ferry ready for the 2.5 hour trip across to Lewis - TopicsExpress

Loaded onto the ferry ready for the 2.5 hour trip across to Lewis Island. Departed at 6pm and half an hour later we had engine trouble and had to turn back to Ullapool - finally got to Lewis at 12.30 am. Spent the next day travelling to Port Ness at the top of the Island. Beautiful harbour and scenery but no life anywhere. Lunch in the van on the side of the road then off to the site of the Callanish Standing Stones. it is believed that these were erected for ceremonial reasons - 5000BC and older than the Pyramids! Unbelievable! Still no sign of life apart from tourists (nothing open here either - not even the information centre ). We started to think that the world had stopped the night before, but have since been informed that the "Wee Free" religion, to which they all belong, forbid anything on Sunday, apart from worship. Nothing is open, no work is done and no one comes outside the house. They share meals at nominated houses and all preparation is done on Saturday. Their actions will need to change if they want to rely on tourists. Monday saw us meandering - and would you believe we had to cross cattle grids and pass peat mounds on the highway down to where we caught the ferry over to Skye. Drove to Sligo and found a camp site in the middle of nowhere (apart from a Pub across the road ) and set up for the night. Met a Scottish couple and walked one of the walking trails with them, placing a stone on the rocks to indicate that we has walked the mountain (Scottish tradition). Ended up in the Pub till midnight ( with our Scottish friends) then we all had to navigate our way back to camp with no torch.........! Weather is wet and wild! Actually surprised to wake this morning and find we are still on the same site - been blowing a gale all night.
