Local 1189 Director of Organizing Position Named I am pleased to announce that we have found a qualified candidate to serve as our Director of Organizing. Yesterday, Abraham Wangnoo accepted the formal offer from me to work for Local 1189. Abraham comes to us with an extensive background in UFCW organizing. Raised in a Union household, Abraham was a Union member working in the produce department for Cub Foods in Bloomington, MN. He attended college at Moorehead State. After college he worked through the ranks at IHOP; moving from crew chief to assistant manager and general manager in Fargo, and then as the Company’s project coordinator for both Sioux Falls and Sioux City locations. Abraham returned to the UFCW in 2008 and began work as an organizer for the UFCW International Union for our own Region 6 (now Region 5) where he developed his strong organizing skills and was part of multiple organizing victories (Lenders Bagels-Mattoon, IL, JBS Swift Beef-Hyrum, UT, National Beef-Dodge City, KS). In 2011, while training member activists as the lead for the OUR WALMART campaign in the Dallas Fort Worth area of Texas, he was hired by UFCW Local 1000 as the Local’s lead organizer. In his most recent position, Abraham: Ran a 3-month picket line defending UFCW members from new companies in the Local’s jurisdiction Co-coordinated Coca Cola campaign with the Teamsters International Union Brought multiple campaigns to election from scratch (Marrazi Tile, Food Pyramid, CD Hartnet, South Oak Liquors, Sodexo at TCU) Coordinated largest organizing victory with Local in over 15 years (Sodexo at TCU) Organized the first Union liquor store in Texas (South Oak Liquors) Assisted other local unions with elections Had Local and Regional staff assigned to him for campaigns and projects Coordinated events for Locals role with regional assignments (Our Walmart/Making Change at Walmart) Internal organizing with Kroger and Homeland food stores due to right-to-work law in Texas Abraham will be joining our staff on July 14, 2014.
