I estimate well be heading our separate ways after supper between 7-7:30pm. I chose this restaurant because it is inexpensive, the food is good, there are vegetarian options for those who want that, and its very near the movie theater. While we eat, we can share with one another about our experience of seeing the movie Selma and whatever thoughts, feelings, memories, and ideas it may have evoked. If you RSVP to Julianne Wilson via FB Message by 2pm on Sunday, we will have a list of who to look for at the theater. FEEL FREE to invite friends to join in! We may be a Council of 4 - or 24 or??? .... but A Council of Peace we will be! Transportation: On your own. That said, I can carry 3 people with me, and if you are willing to drive and can carry others, we can form some carpools. If youre willing to drive, please indicate how many passengers you can take. Cost: paid by each individual who participates The movie ticket is $8.00 for this matinee showing. Dinner at El Sombrero runs $6-10, depending on what you order. About Calling a Council of Peace..... Last Sunday, an amazing thing happened. A Council of Peace was called in Clarkesville, GA for part of an afternoon in Celebration of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. Many of you receiving this email were there. The feedback I received, in person, on the information forms, and later via email and facebook was overwhelmingly positive. I hope that if you were there, it was an experience you found meaningful. The fact that nearly 70% of the people who filled out forms indicated that they would like to participate in a future community dialogue speaks volumes - in part to the success of the program, but much more, I think, to our great need and desire to connect with one another in meaningful ways. To share and be heard. To listen and understand. When we parted, it was with the suggestion that the closing of that days Council of Peace was not an ending as much as a releasing of that particular Council in order to seed future Councils of Peace. I offered the image of a dandelion because we all have witnessed that bright yellow flower turned to a sphere of seeds that with the puff of a childs breath are scattered into the wind (and probably the neighbors yard!). I offered that image because dandelions can grow just about anywhere, just as we need peace to grow...... and because we are the seeds of the change we wish to see in this world. I also suggested that any of us seeds could convene A Council of Peace - at school, at work, at home, in the community, among our friends, and ideally with people we dont know, whom we perceive as different in some way....as long as it is done with the intention of fostering understanding and building bridges, in accordance with the agreements we spoke together that day (see below). And so, in this way, I am Calling a Council of Peace for this Sunday afternoon - January 25th. Yes, its short notice. But dont worry if your weekend is already booked - this is definitely NOT not the only Council of Peace that will be called in the coming months in NE Georgia! I expect there here will be both informal and formal, facilitated dialogues between various groups in our region - some folks at last Sundays celebration shared some great ideas for that. My hope is that LOTS of Councils of Peace will be called - and that many of you who are reading this email will be among those who call them! Soon there will be more information shared from last weeks Martin Luther King, Jr. program and further details on some of the announcements that were made. But for now, this is enough. I look forward to seeing whomever is drawn to join in watching Selma together on Sunday! In Joy, Julianne PS Here is a copy of the agreements from last week, that will also be the guide for our post-movie discussions: Council of Peace Agreements For the purpose of coming together today as a Council of Peace and nurturing peace in our lives and in the world, WE AGREE to refrain from judging, persuading, defending or interrupting those with whom we are in dialogue. WE AGREE to be curious and to be real. WE AGREE to listen, in order to understand, regardless of whether our views are similar or different. WE AGREE to hold this space as sacred and to BE WITH one another here in openness and love.
