Local Search Team Headed to Mexican Border Alamo Area Search And Rescue (AASAR) is deploying two canine search teams to Brooks County, Texas to assist local law enforcement in locating and recovering human remains in areas known to be travelled by illegal immigrants. The Brooks County Sheriff’s Office requested AASAR’s assistance due to the high volume of deaths occurring as these immigrants attempt to traverse the harsh South Texas environment. AASAR will be departing San Antonio on July 18th, and search operations will continue through July 20th. AASAR’s objective is to help locate the remains of immigrants whose deaths were previously unreported. Human remains discovered by AASAR will be turned over to the Brooks County Sheriff who may utilize forensic anthropology labs to help identify the remains. Whenever identifications are made, attempts to notify family members of the deceased in the United States and Mexico will be handled through the Sheriffs office. In June, local media reported that 35 immigrant deaths had been recorded in Brooks County since January 1st, 2014. It is unknown how many deaths have gone unreported or undiscovered. Brooks County is located approximately 70 miles from the US/Mexican border, and the county seat of Falfurias is approximately 160 miles south of San Antonio. Brooks County encompasses roughly 1000 square miles primarily composed of private ranchland.
