Local Student Rage Hits UWS It was valuable to attend a BBQ at UWS’s Campbelltown Campus with Shadow Minister for Education, Senator Kim Carr, Senator Deb O’Neill and Labor’s candidate for Campbelltown, Greg Warren. There we met and talked with students from Science and Health Science studies who were deeply concerned with the Federal Government’s decision that 50% of the cost of studies should be borne by students. This is a recipe for long term indebtedness, inability to complete studies, a poor bank credit rating and will dissuade many people from undertaking university studies. The new decision to let universities increase fees will see $100,000 degrees, the diminishment of regional universities such as UWS as the top 8 cream off the most money and lift their prestige further. It will lead to a very significant decline in Australia’s universities’ research capacity. UWS predominantly caters for western Sydney students who will have less financial support from their families and are often the first people from their families to reach university.
