Local artists to showcase their expertise Artists from the Pop up Parramatta initiative and Parramatta Artist Studios will be showcasing their expertise and experience to young and up-and-coming artists during Sydney Design Week on Saturday 10 August, 11am-1pm at Connection Arcade, Parramatta. Hosted by Executive Director of the Australian Design Alliance, Lisa Cahill, ‘50 Shades of Parramatta’ will highlight the works of six resident artists, including Fashion Designer, Ruth Fattal, Artist and Sculptor, Simon Cook, Puppet Creator, Wez Champion and artists, Tarik Ahlip, Kiri Morcombe, Kerri Kenton and Chrissie Ianssen. The artists will provide insight into the fashion and design industry as well as the benefits of creating beautiful objects to transform once empty spaces. Lord Mayor of Parramatta, Cr John Chedid, said Council is committed to allowing public access to creative spaces in Parramatta through innovative events such as ’50 Shades of Parramatta’. “This event has been designed to provide young, aspiring artists an opportunity to engage with and learn from artists behind Parramatta’s creative spaces. “Nurturing our creative community is important and we’re very proud of the design and artistic expertise we have in our City,” Cr Chedid said. ’50 Shades of Parramatta’ program highlights: • Fashion Designer, Ruth Fattal, will speak about working with a limited palette, and why the commuter market is the target demographic for her range. • Simon Cook will discuss the informal garden sculpture he created in the laneway next to his studio. • Wez Champion, who creates beautiful Czech-style carved puppets from Australian exotic woods and finishing techniques, will speak in detail about commission work and this process. • Tarik Ahlip will provide insight into his artistic practice of incorporating elements of architecture into his mixed media paintings. • Kiri Morcombe and Kerrie Kenton will talk about a cross-cultural art group that creates beautiful and innovative objects rooted in strong cultural traditions. • Chrissie Ianssen will delve into creating commission work for the Parramatta Artist studios based on geometric designs.
