When Motions Unlimited opened its doors in 1999, Sandra and Michael Alberga hoped to encourage boys and girls of all ages to develop a positive attitude to physical activity through gymnastics. With a state-of-the-art facility and a high-calibre coaching staff, the programme has grown steadily and competitive teams continue to raise their standard, earning recognition both locally and abroad. In 2013, the boys competitive programme consists of seven boys, ages 6 to 11, who have travelled extensively to compete against top clubs in both the US and the Caribbean. The boys train three days a week for two to three hours under the guidance of coach Alison Gansebom. These boys have brought home numerous team and individual top place finishes against some of the best teams in the region. Earlier this month, a clinic was held for the boys team at Motions Unlimited with US coach and judge, Fred McCracken. Fred has coached many state, regional and national champions and has coached gymnasts to the World Championship level. He has also coached gymnasts who have gone on to compete at major universities in the US. “I was very impressed with the calibre of the boys here in Cayman,” McCracken said. “There is a lot of potential within the team and if they continue to work hard, they will be in a strong position to continue to place well next season and into the future.” The gymnastics season will conclude with the “Gymnastics Extravaganza” at Motions on 22 June. Both girls and boys teams at all levels will perform routines demonstrating skills on each apparatus.
