Local elections are, in many ways, more important than the presidential ones. With a smaller voter base individual votes count for more. Lots of decisions that affect our daily lives are made by people we elect in these elections. Finding viable candidates that more closely match your own politics is more likely. And successful local politicians get training to move up the ladder. Also, there are usually 2 elections every year, not one. The first is a primary in which you have by far your greatest opportunity to vote for someone who represents your politics more closely. Part of the reason things never seem to change in politics is that so few people take advantage of the opportunities they have in primaries to effect that change. I got this from David White.
