Local fishermen continue to bring in numerous Striped Bass reports as well as hope that blackfish have rebounded in strong numbers. On Sunday, Tony Todarello, Simon Negrin and his son Joey worked the Robert Moses Bridge pilings for over 40 blackfish in the 12-21 range. Simons largest Tog of 6.27lbs. fell victim to a whole large green crab. Three other fish also checked in at over 4lbs. and were caught on both fiddler crabs and greens. The guys noted that they tried our new clam and crab based Blackfish Bomb chum for the first time and it seemed to double their success. Bob Kahn and his wife, Jeri scored well with blackfish on Monday while fishing the rockpiles in the Oak Beach Channel. While on their boat, Fish Eyes the couple anchored up and dropped their chumpot during the last part of the outgoing tide. Jeri had two keepers of 18 and 19 while Bob filled his limit of 4 blackfish from 19-20. Bob says the bite was great at first, but turned off after the chum ran out. Steve Marino and his buddy caught the early Striped Bass bite East of the Fire Island Inlet on Monday. Steve weighed a quality fish of 32.2 lbs and his buddy wasnt far behind with a nice 30.0 lb. Striper. A total of 10 fish were landed with 2 kept for the table. They used a combination of heavier Diamond Jigs of 6 ounces or better tipped with sand eels on the incoming tide. Based on several reports most colors worked, but green or yellow tubes produced best for the majority of fishermen this past week. Also on Monday, Mike Ginsberg, Pat Kenneally, Dave Cheung, and Tom Yacono boated some Stripers up to 38 in 55-60 depths just East of Ocean Beach. The guys bounced jigs tipped with sand eels and encountered a mixed of Bluefish and Bass. On Saturday, Squaw Island Fishing Club members, Frank Haberstroh, grandson Walter Haberstroh, and Greg Charkowick headed way East of the F.I. Inlet to fish off of Cherry Grove. The group used green tubed A47 jigs. Frank noted it was an outgoing tide with a steady drift. In all, three Striped Bass were caught with Walters top fish of 20.44lbs. weighed in for the Squaw Island Fishing Clubs annual tournaments Junior Division.
