Local leaders voted at the Union of BC Municipalities just now to - TopicsExpress

Local leaders voted at the Union of BC Municipalities just now to ADOPT three emergency resolutions recognizing that Ottawas pipeline approval process is broken. Burnaby asked the UBCM to call for the restoration of oral cross-examination and full public hearings in the Kinder Morgan review. The vote passed. Vancouver asked the UBCM to call for a safety plan to deal with the sinking bitumen already shipped through our communities by Kinder Morgan. The vote passed. Victoria asked the UBCM to call on the province to pull out of the equivalency agreement it signed (handing all powers of review over to the federal government) and hold an independent, parallel review here in British Columbia. The vote passed. Local people are taking back their power in this province. It starts at the ground level -- in community meetings, at local businesses, on the doorstep. Now municipal governments are taking up the fight. Today they sent a message loud and clear to the upper levels of government: you cant exclude local people from the decisions they will have to live with for decades. This is a great day for democracy in British Columbia.-- Dogwood Initiative
