Local school children can thank the 3-county South Branch Career - TopicsExpress

Local school children can thank the 3-county South Branch Career and Technical Center schedule for last week’s start to the Christmas and New Year’s holiday. Following a recent “snow day” there had been rumors that schools would be open on either Dec. 23, or Jan. 2. Both days were originally scheduled as vacation days. Superintendent of schools Dr. DeEdra Bolton, recently, said there would be no changes. Dr. Bolton agreed both those dates could have been used as make-up days. However, she decided against doing so because not all area schools were closed that day. The storm closed schools in Grant and Hardy counties. but not in Pendleton County. That means opening schools here either day could cause a problem for the vocational school because Pendleton County students wouldn’t be in attendance. However, this doesn’t mean students won’t be making up the lost day. Bolton said the first chance for a “make up” day is Jan. 28. Bolton spoke at a Board of Education session at Petersburg High School. Other items on the agenda were a discussion about standardized test scores, a pair of executive sessions and approval of a letter of support for teachers’ bid for higher wages. The letter of support was requested by members of the Grant County Education Association. Bolton said BOE members support better pay for school employees. However, if that is going to happen, the state Legislature will have to provide the money. Get more details in this weeks Press.
