Local youth invited to try out for Charlotte’s Web summer production The Monticello Theatre Association will host a production of the children’s classic Charlotte’s Web. Performances will be August 9, 10, 15 and 16. “MTA is excited to offer an opportunity for local students to get involved in live theater,” says Kelly Nowlin, MTA board president. “It’s important that kids have the chance to practice and grow their acting skills while they’re young and adventurous. The older we get, the harder it becomes to put ourselves out there and try new things. We hope this production will jumpstart a few acting careers.” The MTA invites students entering grades 5 through 12 to audition for the play, which will feature a cast of up to 15 characters. Auditions will be held at the Phoenix Theatre on June 23 and June 24 at 7:00 p.m. Students will read from the script at the auditions. All experience levels are invited to audition. The timeless children’s story showcases the friendship between Wilber, a runt piglet, and Charlotte, a spider who communicates by spelling out words in her web. The play also features other farm animals, including sheep, geese, and a rat. The humans in the play include Fern, a girl who raises the piglet, her parents, and her aunt and uncle. Sherrie Hildreth will direct the play. Hildreth has directed MTA’s children’s workshops for the past two years. She is a music educator who has completed her Ph.D. coursework at the University of Illinois and is presently teaching at Richland Community College in Decatur. She has directed children’s theater in Champaign-Urbana area. Questions about auditions or the production may be directed to Lana Ross at 217-762-2679.
