Logging giant Weyerhaeusers vice president of “sustainable” - TopicsExpress

Logging giant Weyerhaeusers vice president of “sustainable” forestry, Cassie Phillips, admitted that the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) certification program approves “conventional commercial forestry.” It’s nice that the timber industry finally agrees with us! That is exactly what we’ve been saying. SFI is nothing more than business-as usual industrial forestry, which allows companies like 3M to greenwash products with its “green” label. What does the SFI standard look like on the ground? It labels the following practices as “good for forests,” to name a few: Clear cuts the size of 90 football fields Logging of old growth forests and endangered species’ habitats Converting natural forests into monoculture and same-age tree plantations Clearcutting steep slopes near salmon-bearing streams Massive and pervasive use of aerially-sprayed forest chemicals, such as herbicides and fertilizers. Sadly, these practices are common, legal, and even considered “best management practices” under most state forestry laws. forestethics.org/blog/weyerhaeuser-admits-it-sfi-puts-green-label-business-usual-logging#.Uow8Na6yhwg.facebook
