Lok Satta Party Bengaluru team has been fighting for reduction in city bus (BMTC) fares since 2013! BMTC and various SRTCs are riddled with mismanagement and we have protested on numerous occasions over the need to plug financial leaks, curb corruption, and lower the bus fares.BMTC bus fares are the highest across all Indian metros. When diesel prices went up, BMTC increased fares in an instant. But when diesel prices started to come down in India in line with dropping global crude oil prices, BMTC refused to lower bus fares citing expenses! Recently Loksatta Party held yet another protest outside Shanti Nagar bus station demanding: Be FAIR, reduce the FARE. We mobilized public opinion and met Transport Minister, BMTC officials giving a formal request to reduce fares. It is encouraging sign that Honble Transport Minister said on the floor of the house that fares will be reduced soon. It appears that our efforts to exert pressure have yielded results! Congratulations to everyone that supported this campaign and joined us in public protests and helped spread the word. But we are not done yet. Loksatta Party will see how meaningful the fare reduction is. We demanded a fare roll back across all sectors by minimum of 25 percent in KSRTCs and 50 percent in BMTC and other City Transport Systems. We have calculations to prove how such price cuts can be achieved. - We need to go way beyond diesel price cuts since public transport directly impacts quality of life and need to be seen differently.
