London mayor Boris Johnson has backed a report calling for the establishment of a free movement agreement between the UK, Canada, Australia, and NZ, modelled on the existing Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement. It has previously been reported that the Australian Government has been pushing for this sort of deal. Were generally supportive of the idea of free movement between like-minded countries. We believe that Australia and New Zealand have both benefitted from the free movement of people across the Tasman - it has strengthened the links between our peoples and allowed for a better and more efficient allocation of labour within our single market. Given all of this, the call for a broader free movement zone is one we consider worthy of consideration. That said, we would hope that those establishing any future free movement agreement would learn from the existing trans-Tasman experience. We agree that access to government services and voting rights should not be immediate for migrants. However, equally, restrictions on their rights should not be permanent. There is much room to find a suitable compromise that protects both the rights of migrants and national budgets. We would be interested in hearing you thoughts on the proposal. Do you support it? Do you think lessons could be learnt from the operation of the TTTA? Well share the full report with supporters when it is available.
