Long Beach Memorial Medical Center surgeon helps Liberian Ebola victims LONG BEACH >> Dr. Gracie Ann Dinkins isn’t one to sit on the sidelines when someone needs help. The Long Beach Memorial Medical Center trauma surgeon traveled to Haiti in 2010 after a 7.0 earthquake killed more than 230,000 people and injured more than 300,000. In August she went to Northern Vietnam where she volunteered her services to patients living in remote and mountainous villages. So when Dinkins returned home to see her native Liberia in West Africa in the grip of an Ebola epidemic, she moved to action. “I’m used to seeing something wrong and doing something about it,” said Dinkins, a Redondo Beach resident who spent her childhood in Liberia and represented the country in the 1984, 1996 and 2000 Olympics as a track and field athlete. “Normally, I would be there next week, but I can’t go because it is not safe enough,” she said. “I’m waiting for a vaccine to be developed and as soon as it is, I’ll be one of the first volunteers because I want to help.
