Long Beach Public Schools Veterans Exemption I am not a - TopicsExpress

Long Beach Public Schools Veterans Exemption I am not a Veteran, however my father served in the Navy during World War II, and he is a proud NAVY Veteran. On August 9, 1942, my father was a 20-year old, Chief Petty Officer on the Quincy (CA-39) and earned the Navy Cross, and 2 Purple Hearts in battle. The Quincy and 32 other ships and aircraft were sunk in Ironbottom Sound the stretch of water at the southern end of The Slot between Guadalcanal, Savo Island, and Florida Island of the Solomon Islands, during the Battle of Guadalcanal in 1942-43. Over 50% of the crew on the Quincy were killed during the Battle of Savo Island. This was a fierce battle and the waters in this area are still considered sacred, and strict silence is observed as ships cruise through. So by now you are asking what does this have to do with the Long Beach Public Schools Veterans Exemption... It has to do with putting you self out there to serve in Public Office getting elected to serve, and then refusing to make some decision, or the right decision. The members of the Board of Education have refused to even vote to approve the Veterans Exemption, and instead have placed an ADVISORY ONLY Proposition on the ballot to solicit approval or opposition to the Exemption. Even if the proposition passes, it does not bind the board to pass the veterans exemption. The Hempstead Town Board participates in a property tax reduction program for eligible veterans. Eligible applicants will receive a partial exemption from county and town taxes equal to 15 percent of their assessment for service during wartime and an additional 10 percent for service in a combat area (includes recipients of expeditionary medals). The Veterans Exemption applies to county and town taxes, but not to special district taxes. Villages and school districts also have the option to offer this exemption. In order to receive the Veterans exemption, the veteran must have served on active duty in the United States Armed Forces during a designated time of war as follows: Persian Gulf Conflict Beginning August 2, 1990 Panama December 20, 1989 - January 31, 1990 Lebanon June 1, 1983 - December 1, 1987 Grenada October 23, 1983 - November 21, 1983 Vietnam War February 28, 1961 - May 7, 1975 Korean War June 27, 1950 - January 31, 1955 World War II December 7, 1941 - December 31, 1946 World War I April 6, 1917 - November 11, 1918 Mexican Border Period May 9, 1916 - April 5, 1917 Spanish American War April 21, 1898 - July 4, 1902 I urge my Facebook Friends and Family, and all Veterans to attend school board meeting or write to the Board of Education to voice your thoughts on this issue. Clearly, I support our Veterans, and I urge the Board of Education to pass a resolution approving the Veterans Exemption.
