Long Hammock Memories: Author, Hulon H. Nichols In this book the Author chronicles the area later to be known as Sumter County, Florida (1853). History beginning in the early 1800s includes Native American and free Blacks before the war between the states. The Nichols, OBerry, Caruthers and Scott families protected and hid the free Blacks from bounty hunters that wished to take them back north. The families also protected them from US soldiers that wished to kill or ship them west with the Seminole. These four families began a corn mill, cloth weaving and cane grinding - syrup operation that became known as Scotts Mills. The Blacks were part owners of the mill, and it was before the war between the states (Civil War). The Author writes about being the last known trained Southern Wilderness Talker after 1940. The means of communication was to use bull whips, yells and whistles for private and commercial messages before the inventions of the telegraph (thus the Florida Crackers). Southern wilderness talks gained prominence during the Civil War as parts of it became known as the rebel yell. hulonhnichols/LongHMem.html
