Long Term Strategies Needed To Rehabilitate Sick Soil - Expert Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Soil scientist Prof Dr Shamsudin Jusop said although it will take a long time to rehabilitate the soil, these steps are necessary as soil conditions in these areas had badly degraded due to prolonged indiscriminate deforestation, agriculture and mans activities. Many agricultural lands in the East Coasts states of Peninsular Malaysia are seriously affected by the recent floods, especially in the state of Kelantan. In the highlands, logging and excessive land clearing for agriculture have exposed the soils to the erosive impact of rainwater, he said in a statement here Friday. He said the yellowish and reddish nature of the mud from the recent floods indicated the presence of kaolinitic materials and the lack of plant nutrients. This soil affected by the floods also would be infertile for growing crops for some time without undergoing proper mitigation, he added.
