Long ago, in winter, when 18, watching a band at the Lanch. Upstairs in the bar in the break, the usual crush. On a good night you might have a nice young lady pressed up against your back. Her perfume embracing you and taking you somewhere exotic. That night, a voice, boomed out from behind. That Liverpool poet, Adrian Henri, crushed up against me. Familiar voice, familiar donkey jacket, he called to the bar Excuse me love, Im on with the band in 5 minutes - can i have three pints of Guinness. The crowd moved apart, in respect for the thirsty poet. Downstairs, Sticky George - Adrians new band after Liverpool scene, climbed on stage. He slurped at the Guinness while holding the mic. The form that had crushed me in the bar crushed vowels in that familiar accent. The poet I looked up to, looked just like he did on Bread on the Night. That night, without knowing, he gave me this story for name dropping, to share as a prelude to a favorite piece from Bread on the Night, - some 40 years on!. somehttps://youtube/watch?v=fhEDBHI_13M
