Long distance races dominate horse-racing meetin. After last week’s successful start to the second phase of the season with the main races being won by Nicos de Peneme (trot Premier class) and British newcomer Dasho (Class A flat race) with the latter registering the seasonal best time on the sprint 1,250m distance, another entertaining programme is in the offing on Friday starting at 6.30pm. This involves 11 trot races over the longer 2,640m distance with the meeting’s highlight being the Premier class race involving a full field of 16 trotters. These include popular horses such as Label Chouan which placed well last week, multiple past championship winner Arnie Sensation, Sultan November and Vanmaker Limburgia which placed well in the Sette Giugno Cup and Summer Championship finals respectively and various others. It will also be interesting to follow the status of some quality horses coming from a rather long lay-off, such as Bonus Kall, Of Course Ramble, Nagano Phedo and Nuage de Bourgogne. We also find two balanced races reserved for Gold class horses, again involving full 16 horse fields. These feature last week’s winner Midnight Passion, runners’ up Pan des Couperies and Pitchpin des Bois and placing horses Baron G.L. and Energy Launcher, among others. As has been the case last week, it is now the turn of more popular horses making their return after the summer break, such as Orage du Pont, Phenix de La Roque, Little Nick and others. The remaining races consist of five for the Silver class (featuring two nine year old newcomers; one French and one Swedish) and two reserved for Bronze class horses, with the curtain-raiser being the only Copper class race on the card. The incognito surrounding the current state of form of horses returning from various months’ break adds to the unpredictable outcome of races at this time of the season. However, those hoping to leave their mark in the next few months need to improve their form without delay with the Autumn Championship being round the corner for Premier class trotters. In conclusion we convey our best wishes to the three new Malta Racing Club council members, Kevin Debono, Anthony Mallia and Darren Mizzi, elected last weekend to represent horse-owners and drivers.
