Long night, late post.... While I was touring one of the 3 local rehab facilities this afternoon (actually, yesterday given the time), I received a call that John was being discharged at 5 pm to the one I was visiting. We never got to choose. The other two had never responded to Johns Hopkins, or me, regarding Johns case. However, it was the one we were leaning towards based on recommendations. I was at peace with the facility. The room is so much more comfortable for him vs. the hospital, and he needs rehab now. The hospital is not capable of providing it, and they are the first to admit it. I was not ready in any way, shape or form for this move so quickly, but I didnt have a choice. Johns brother, Kenny, drove up almost instantly after I called, and good friend, Barb Fafaul, was at the ready. They met us when we arrived, John via ambulance, me following in my vehicle. John was uncomfortable about the change and was quick to visually explore what was occurring around him. At Hopkins, he had figured out how the feeding system worked and became comfortable. Its a little different here, and he spent several minutes checking it out and questioning it. Hes amazing! The thing that blows my mind the most is that John is completely aware of his own state of being, and is making sure we know damn well we have to look out for him. When he is awake, he is on complete alert to know his surroundings. He knows immediately which staff members are lazy or incompetent. The good news is now he can get dressed each day and start to recover in a better environment. I believe his incredible smarts are going to be his greatest asset. We love you, John! You can do this, buddy.
