Long post that really has no new information... just ranting. Feel free to skip or feel free to read and provide commentary. Tonight my dad told me about a few people that said why does it matter? when the UAB Football discussion came up. Their main defense... They aint playing for a national championship so they dont matter... SOOOO lets play a game called simple minded athletic cuts. Lets cut all the teams in the state that dont matter. Ill start with my number one team UAB. We would have to cut everything except Soccer (playing in the NCAA Tournament this week so they have a chance), Softball (has played in the NCAAs for the past few years and made a Super Regional two years ago... but if they dont make it this year they are out) and Basketball because there has to be at least one team in the state playing basketball. Might as well be the best. Lets get the real easy ones out of the way (NOTE: if you are a fan of one of these schools and Im wrong and someone listed actually does matter and remember mattering only means playing for the National Championship then correct me please...) Say bye bye to the athletic programs at South, UNA, West Alabama, Alabama A&M and State, Miles, Samford, Troy, and JSU. Yes... even #3 JSU because remember even though youll probably be National Champs in FCS this year or next, to the idiots in the world FCS doesnt matter... Wait theres more... Alabama would have to cut all but Football, Gymnastics, and Softball. Auburn would have to cut everything except Football and Swimming. So instead of giving thousands of students the opportunity to better themselves through sports with the bonus of free tuition... we would have 8 teams whose soul purpose is to matter. And theoretically, since basketball uses an ACTUAL playoff system where conference tournament champions get an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and thus have a chance at the National Championship, all basketball teams can stay. Mainly because its the best sport. I like my HBCUs. I like my non SEC rivalries like South and Troy. And can you imagine a world without The Sound of the South or The Marching Southerners? Seems like a crappy world to me. Moral of the story: lets have a more realistic view of mattering than the champs my dad talks to. Poor simple minded champs... Go Blazers.
