Long post, to answer friends questions about Landens annual 22Q - TopicsExpress

Long post, to answer friends questions about Landens annual 22Q appointment today... Landens appointment went good! Sometimes with Landen its easy to forget that he has 22Q because hes just Landen, no serious medical conditions (we are blessed) related to 22Q and the minor medical conditions we are so use to that its just normal for us. 22Q kids can have 132 underlying medical conditions that is related to their syndrome. Some more severe than others. So when we are just dealing with common respiratory infections, speech issues and minor things like that its easy not to think of the others that are a possibility. He had his blood drawn the main things they are checking are calcium levels and thyroid both are common issues for 22Q kids so Im hoping that all comes back clear. Next month he will go back to have an ultrasound of his kidneys (Children with 22q Deletion Syndrome can have kidney abnormalities, such as underdeveloped, cystic kidneys, or even a missing kidney), he will have an X-ray of his spine (22Q kids can have abnormalities especially the upper spine) also he will have his eyes tested and ears. Lastly he will have an appointment with a speech specialist who he saw today as well. After seeing him today she diagnosed him with VPI (Velopharyngeal Insufficiency). After he has a scope done to verify and see any other issues in his throat/mouth he will have a surgery to repair the issue. This will help his speech!! (Exciting) VPI is hard for me to explain so Ill post the pictures. Flappy thing in our throats that open up when we speak blocking air that comes out so we can speak our sounds correctly. Kids with VPI have short flappy things that do not block the air which makes it difficult to make certain letter sounds correctly, in turn making a speech delay. So in the pics the soft palate at rest is Landens all the time. Sooo to end this post (HA) after the surgery and with some extensive speech therapy they expect Landens speech to improve and grow greatly. Exciting! Him being able to speak clearly will play an important roll in social skills as he gets older in school so we are excited to have found this and that its fixable!! So thats the run down!!! Landens amazing (and was so incredibly good for spending 6 hrs at a hospital being picked on) ❤️ The end...
