Long sappy post ahead. You have been warned. Most of you know of our trials this summer, with Abbys two surgeries - emergency appendectomy and for her tibial plateau fracture - and all the hardship (for her, really) thats entailed, and how its made things a little more complex around here. What I havent really talked about much, however, is the money issue. Simply put: its been just this side of desperate. As a teacher I dont get paid over the summer, and I just got my first paycheck today. Usually Abby works full time to cover the difference, but with her injuries, shes been on disability, which really doesnt cover much. Weve basically been wondering and praying about how to make ends meet. And then, enter family and friends. We have been overrun with gift cards to grocery stories and restaurants, people making meals for us, donating whole freezer-fulls of meat. My father (with basic grunt work help from me) has been building a much-needed sidewalk to make things safer for Abby Kennedy Lucia as she travels to therapy. People from our church have come and mowed our lawn, and helped me dig out the sidewalk. And people have sent MORE gift cards. Probably the greatest blessing in all of this: even w/being a little tired absorbing some extra duties around the house (I keep telling everyone Im growing and learning new life skills :) ), I have had the curious sensation of not wanting for anything. Absolutely all of our needs have been met, right on down the line. And then, today. Abby looks into our account, and sees that my paycheck has gone through, what a relief: We didnt bounce anything, we made it. Then, she notices that shes received a paycheck nearly equal of her regular paycheck. Stunned, she calls the benefits office to learn that all of her coworkers have donated their some of their paid time off and vacation days to help deliver us this paycheck, and one more after this, also. And theres nothing else to say, because Im officially speechless, and more thankful than words can express.
