Long story short, I did the break in, idled at 2k RPM for 10 - TopicsExpress

Long story short, I did the break in, idled at 2k RPM for 10 minutes, three times for a total of 30 minutes. I used the AMS oil special break in oil. I put in Mobile One and some zinc additive and was planning to change out the oil at 500 miles. Last week, the engine was smoking a bit and vibrating badly at idle. I checked the torque on the intake and they were all at ~25lbs. I checked other things and finally took the valve covers off and found a loose rod on the exhaust valve for piston 4. I was kind of excited in that I found the culprit. I tightened to zero lash on my hydraulic flat tappet lifters. I drove it out on the highway for about 10 miles and turned around and came back...at a stop light I noticed a little smoke and the engine vibration was back again. I popped the valve covers again and noticed that the pushrod was loose again. I knew then that my came was wearing down. I pulled the cam and the lifters....pics below. Turns out that I had two worn out lifters and two lobes eaten away on the cam. My questions are...what can cause this? Was my lifter not rotating properly? Was it the synthetic oil? Should I change out the oil pump as well for fear of metal chunks in there? I checked my crankshaft bearings (I just popped a cap off to look) and they look good. The pushrods look great as well, no bends or weird wearing. My heads are Edlebrock Performer RPM 60069 and my cam was the Comp Cams one that is suppose to be matched to the heads. Was I suppose to take out the inner valve springs for the break in? What are my options now? Can I use a roller rocker lifter? I noticed the lifters are a very very tight fit, some didnt go in easy and they didnt come out easy. There is a speed shop where I am in El Paso, they can order me a Cam, I just need a solid (hehe pun) recommendation. Thank you, James
