Long way to go. This article lists the cleanest cities in India, as of 2010. According to a nationwide Union Urban Development Ministry exercise, called the National City Rating under the ambitious national urban sanitation policy, the rating task was conducted across 423 urban conglomerates, including 24 in Karnataka. The ministry’s policy initiative was part of an objective to create awareness on hygienic conditions in urban areas. Chandigarh has emerged as the number one city in terms of sanitation in the National Rating Exercise Announcing this, Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy listed Mysore at number two, Surat at number three and the NDMC area of New Delhi in the fourth position on May 11, 2010.[1] The purpose of this exercise was to recognise better performers as well as to encourage other cities to perform better. The idea behind the exercise was to galvanise action in states and cities towards better sanitation. Policy rating of 423 cities which covers 72 per cent of the urban population was undertaken. The country was divided into five zones for the purpose and each city was scored on 19 indicators. The cities were classified into four colour categories of red, black, blue and green. The rating of cities created a baseline which could be used to measure progress in respect of sanitation in our cities and is expected to encourage cities to perform better. None of the cities were rated as Green the best category in the exercise. However, four cities—Chandigarh, Mysore, Surat and NDMC area in New Delhi were in the Blue category. Chandigarh has emerged as the cleanest city in India, with a rating of 73.48 points for sanitation, as per a study conducted by ministry of urban development.[2] In order to keep its ranking and reputation as the greenest and cleanest city in India, the administration of Chandigarh is considering a green code for the city. The administration is holding talks with The Energy and Resources Institute to work on the implementation of the code. If the code is implemented, buildings in the city will have to be environment-friendly including use of natural construction material and lower energy consumption. Chandigarh is also on the way to become the countrys first solar city in 2016.
